E.A.? French for artist's proof - epreuve d' artiste. After all he did move to Paris in 1926 where he created Cirque Calder a unique body of art which predated performance art by forty years.
When my daughter Janice returned from attending the Chicago Art Institute she settled for some time in what we call "Calder Country" (in Connecticut). Living close by to Calder's home, she introduced herself to him by baking him a blueberry pie and bringing it to him. Janice loved taking me for lunch to a restored water mill restaurant which boasted personal items made for the restaurant by Calder and initialed by him with a C.A. One item I recall was a hooked iron coat rack. We were so thrilled to be there.
The library at Steven's Institute in Hoboken, N.J. houses one of the finest mobiles.
